ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (March 21, 2024) – Elementary, middle, and high school students from around the country will convene at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Saturday, March 23, at 3 p.m. for the 16th Annual Spring Showdown – Step Cinema Edition.
The event is in the Robinson Auditorium of the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center and is a combined effort between the ECSU Pre-Alumni Association, the ICONZ, Lady ICONZ, and Atomic ICONZ step teams. Students are traveling to Viking Land from South Carolina, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, and other areas throughout the country to participate. Event tickets are $25 and are available here.
“The event's goal is to provide a safe place for step teams to display their talent and highlight youth from the local and surrounding areas,” said Bryan Spence, ’09, interim director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, adding that he’s excited about the impact it will have in the community.
“This is a chance for local and national communities to have an opportunity to see and express themselves through the art of stepping,” he said. “These step teams are often an outlet for youth and an opportunity to engage and keep them in something positive.” Representatives from the ECSU Office of Admissions and Recruitment will also be in attendance to offer attendees information about the university.
“In addition to being a platform for entertainment, this event allows us to also influence the long-term recruitment pipeline by engaging with students and their parents as well,” Spence said.
Competition winners earn a $3,000 cash prize.
