ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) and Partners for Rural Impact (PRI) have made good on their promise historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in North Carolina with grants to support educational outcomes in rural communities.
The HBCU Give Back National Service Initiative aims to enhance civic infrastructure and capacity in rural areas, focusing on building educational opportunities for HBCUs. PRI and ECSU seek to create positive change in rural regions through community-based service and leadership development programs.
"We anticipate that the schools will begin receiving their checks in the mail later next week," said Kevin Wade, interim vice chancellor for student affairs and principal investigator.
Grant awards totaling $227,500 will be awarded to seven North Carolina HBCUs to support educational outcomes in rural communities. In February, ECSU was awarded $450,000 for the initiative. The grants will be awarded from that amount with the remaining funds to be used to oversee and track the project's overall progress, handle all administrative responsibilities, and implement a service project within the ECSU community for our students.
Recipient institutions include North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T State University, Winston-Salem State University, Livingstone College, Barber-Scotia College, Shaw University, and Johnson C. Smith University. These institutions will support education and leadership development through community-focused programs.
This partnership is a significant step forward in supporting HBCUs and their mission to empower underserved communities. For more information about this partnership and initiative, please visit the website.
